Dr Pepper Cake

This decadent chocolate cake gets its deep, unique flavor from reduced Dr Pepper in the batter, the frosting, and the incredible spiced pecans on top. It’s a show-stopping dessert that’s surprisingly easy to make!

Ingredients

For the Dr Pepper Spiced Pecans:

  • ⅓ cup Dr Pepper

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, cubed

  • ½ tbsp vanilla extract

  • 2 cups chopped pecans

  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar

  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon

  • ¼ tsp kosher salt

  • ⅛ tsp ground clove

For the Cake:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter

  • 1 cup Dr Pepper

  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (natural, not Dutch-processed)

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1½ cups granulated sugar

  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten

  • ½ cup buttermilk

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • ¼ tsp table salt

  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon

For the Chocolate Icing:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter

  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • ½ cup whole milk

  • 4 cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • ½ tbsp ground cinnamon

  • 1 cup chopped Dr Pepper pecans (for the icing)

  • 1 cup whole or roughly chopped Dr Pepper pecans (for garnish)
